Cage Mesh — Buying Guide
Cage mesh is a versatile wire mesh product used extensively by pet owners, hobby farmers, bird keepers, and wildlife carers to construct safe, secure enclosures for animals of all sizes. From small rabbit and guinea pig hutches to large walk-in aviaries and chicken coops, the right cage mesh provides strong, long-lasting containment that keeps animals safely in and predators safely out.
Types of Cage Mesh
- Welded wire mesh: Individual wire strands welded at each intersection, creating a rigid, strong grid. Available in a range of wire gauges and grid spacings. Ideal for rabbit cages, chicken coops, and general animal enclosures where structural rigidity is important
- Hexagonal wire netting (aviary wire): Twisted wire in a hexagonal pattern — lighter and more flexible than welded mesh. Widely used for aviaries, bird enclosures, and snake exclusion applications
- PVC coated mesh: Galvanised wire with a PVC coating for added corrosion resistance and a cleaner appearance — a good choice for indoor or semi-indoor animal enclosures
Choosing the Right Mesh Size
- 12.5mm x 12.5mm (1/2″ x 1/2″): Very fine mesh — suitable for keeping mice, rats, quail, and small reptiles in, and excluding snakes and small predators from enclosures
- 25mm x 25mm (1″ x 1″): The most versatile cage mesh size — suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, and most aviary birds
- 50mm x 25mm: A popular size for chicken runs and larger bird enclosures — good balance of visibility and containment
- 50mm x 50mm: Suitable for larger animals and general-purpose enclosure building where mesh size is less critical
Common Applications
- Chicken coops, hen houses, and free-range chicken runs
- Rabbit hutches and guinea pig enclosures
- Aviaries for parrots, finches, doves, and exotic birds
- Wildlife carer enclosures for possums, gliders, and native birds
- Vegetable garden enclosures to exclude rabbits, bandicoots, and rodents
- Snake exclusion around home gardens and play areas
Installation Tips
When building animal enclosures, always consider predator access from all directions — including underground. For enclosures housing rabbits or small animals vulnerable to foxes and cats, bury the mesh base 200–300mm underground or lay an apron of mesh flat on the ground extending outward from the base of the fence. Use appropriate staples, zip ties, or cage clips to join mesh panels securely, and ensure all cut wire ends are bent inward or capped to prevent animal injury.
Frequently Asked Questions
What gauge wire is best for a chicken coop?
For a secure chicken coop, 1.2mm–1.6mm wire gauge in a 25mm x 25mm or 50mm x 25mm welded mesh is recommended. Avoid thin hexagonal netting for coops as it can be torn by determined predators such as dogs or foxes.
Can I use cage mesh for a snake-proof enclosure?
Yes — for snake exclusion, use a fine hexagonal mesh or welded mesh with openings of 8mm x 8mm or smaller. The mesh must also extend underground and have no gaps at posts or gates to be effective.
