Fence Posts – Timber & Steel Buying Guide
Choosing the right fence post is fundamental to the longevity and structural integrity of your fence line. Whether you’re building a rural boundary fence, a garden perimeter, or an agricultural enclosure, the post type and quality you select will directly affect how well your fence performs over time. We stock both treated timber posts and galvanised steel posts to suit a wide range of applications across South East Queensland.
Timber Fence Posts
Treated pine fence posts are a traditional and popular choice for rural, agricultural, and garden fencing. Pressure-treated with preservative to H4 or H5 rating, they offer good rot resistance and are suitable for in-ground use. Timber strainer posts are commonly used at corners, ends, and gate openings — positions where maximum structural strength is needed to anchor wire tension across long fence runs.
- H4 treated pine: Suitable for in-ground use in standard soil conditions — commonly used for rural and garden fence posts
- H5 treated pine: Enhanced treatment for high-moisture, high-decay-risk environments
- Round vs split: Round posts offer maximum strength; split posts suit lighter-duty garden and visual fencing
Steel Fence Posts
Steel fence posts — including star pickets and steel tube posts — offer excellent durability and are quick to install without the need for concrete in most applications. Hot dipped galvanised steel posts are ideal for coastal areas of the Sunshine Coast and other high-moisture environments where corrosion resistance is a priority. See our dedicated star pickets and steel posts categories for full size and finish options.
When to Use Timber vs Steel Posts
- Use timber strainer posts at corners, ends, and gate openings — timber provides superior compressive and tensile strength for anchoring wire tension
- Use steel star pickets for line posts between strainers — they’re faster to install, lighter, and cost-effective for long runs
- Use steel tube posts for gates, high-traffic areas, and installations requiring greater rigidity than star pickets provide
Post Sizing Guide
For rural boundary fencing, timber strainer posts are typically 2.4m–2.7m long and 100mm–125mm diameter, set to at least 600mm–900mm depth in concrete. Star picket line posts are typically 1500mm–1800mm for standard livestock fencing. Always account for the depth you’ll bury the post when calculating your above-ground height requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should fence posts be set?
As a general rule, set posts to at least one-third of their total length underground. For a 2.4m strainer post, this means 600–800mm of depth. In softer or sandier soils, increase depth and use concrete backfill for additional stability.
