Geotextile Fabric — Buying Guide
What Is Geotextile Fabric?
Geotextile fabric is a permeable synthetic fabric used in civil engineering, landscaping and construction to perform filtration, separation, drainage, protection and reinforcement functions in the ground. When installed between layers of soil, aggregate or other materials, geotextile fabric prevents the mixing of materials (separation), allows water to pass through while retaining soil particles (filtration), and provides a stable, flexible layer that improves structural performance and longevity.
Types of Geotextile Fabric
- Non-woven geotextile fabric — made from bonded polyester or polypropylene fibres; excellent for filtration and drainage applications; the most common type for residential landscaping, retaining walls and drainage systems
- Woven geotextile fabric — stronger and more rigid than non-woven; used for road base separation, load distribution and reinforcement applications
- Composite geotextile — combination of woven and non-woven layers for applications requiring both strength and drainage properties
Common Applications
- Behind retaining walls — prevents soil migration through the wall drainage layer; critical for drainage performance and preventing clogging
- Subgrade separation — separates road base aggregate from soft subsoil to prevent mixing and loss of structural integrity
- French drains and agricultural drainage — wrapped around slotted or perforated drainage pipe to prevent soil entry while allowing water flow
- Weed suppression — laid under mulch, gravel and pavers to reduce weed growth while allowing water infiltration
- Pond liner underlayment — protects PVC and EPDM pond liners from puncture by sharp stones and roots
Selecting the Right Geotextile
Non-woven geotextile in 80–200 g/m² weight range is suitable for most residential landscaping applications including retaining walls and drainage. For road construction and heavy civil applications, use heavier-weight woven or composite geotextile. The opening size (AOS — apparent opening size) determines which soil particle sizes are retained — consult specifications for filter applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can geotextile fabric be used as weed mat?
Non-woven geotextile can suppress weeds while allowing water infiltration, making it suitable as a weed control fabric under mulch and gravel. Purpose-made weed mat products are also available for lighter-duty garden applications.
Does geotextile fabric rot?
Quality polypropylene geotextile fabrics are UV resistant when buried and have a very long service life (20–50+ years in sub-soil applications).
