Electric Fence Energisers — Buying Guide

The energiser (also called a fencer or controller) is the heart of any electric fence system. It converts mains power, battery power, or solar energy into a series of high-voltage, low-amperage pulses that travel along the fence wire. When an animal contacts the wire and completes the circuit to earth, it receives a safe but effective shock that conditions it to respect the fence boundary.

Types of Electric Fence Energisers

  • Mains-powered energisers (240V): Connect to a standard power outlet — deliver the highest and most consistent output for the dollar. Ideal for permanent fencing on properties with mains power access. Best choice for long fence runs, high vegetation loads, and high-pressure livestock situations.
  • Battery-powered energisers (12V or 9V): Operate from a 12V deep-cycle battery or 9V alkaline battery pack — portable and flexible. Suitable for remote paddocks, temporary fences, rotational grazing, and stock camp fencing where no mains power is available.
  • Solar-powered energisers: Incorporate a solar panel and internal battery — fully self-sustaining in locations with adequate sun. Ideal for remote Queensland properties where mains power and battery recharging are impractical. Most effective in Queensland’s high-sunshine climate.

Understanding Joule Ratings

Energiser output is measured in joules (stored energy or output energy). More joules mean more power to push voltage down a long or vegetated fence line. Key guidelines:

  • Allow approximately 1 joule of stored energy per 10km of single wire fence in clean (no vegetation) conditions
  • For multi-wire fences, multiply by the number of wires
  • For heavy vegetation contact or long runs in wet conditions, increase your joule rating by 50–100%
  • For large animals (cattle, horses) or high-pressure situations, more joules provide greater deterrence

Fence Length and Energiser Matching

  • Small properties and garden protection (up to 5km): 0.5–1 joule energiser is typically sufficient
  • Medium rural properties (5–20km fence): 2–5 joule energiser recommended
  • Large farms and stations (20km+ fence): 10+ joule energisers required — consult with our team for correct sizing

Earth System — Critical for Energiser Performance

A properly installed earth system is as important as the energiser itself. Without a good earth, the circuit cannot be completed and the fence will underperform significantly. As a minimum, install 3 x 1.8m galvanised earth stakes in moist soil, spaced 3 metres apart, connected to the energiser earth terminal. In dry, sandy, or rocky soils — common in parts of Queensland — a more extensive earth system may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stored joules and output joules?
Stored joules is the energy the energiser charges up between pulses. Output joules is the energy actually delivered to the fence (always less than stored due to losses). When comparing energisers, use output joules as the most meaningful measure of actual fence performance.

Can I use a solar energiser in a shaded location?
Solar energisers require adequate direct sun to charge effectively. In heavily shaded locations, a battery or mains energiser will provide more reliable performance. In Queensland’s climate, most open rural locations receive sufficient sun for solar energisers to perform well year-round.
