Electric Fence Gate Handles & Switches — Buying Guide
What Are Electric Fence Gate Handles?
Electric fence gate handles are insulated connectors that allow you to pick up, disconnect and reconnect an electrified fence wire safely — creating an easily opened and closed gateway through an electric fence without tools. The insulated grip allows you to handle the wire safely even when the energiser is active. High-quality gate handles maintain a reliable electrical connection when closed, ensuring the fence circuit remains complete through the gateway section.
Types of Gate Handles and Switches
- Bungee rope gate handles — stretchy elastic rope that maintains tension across the gateway opening; connects to inline eye hooks or gate hooks on posts; popular for regular-use gateways
- Standard rope/polywire gate handles — non-stretching polywire or rope gate sections with insulated handles at each end; economical and reliable for lower-traffic gateways
- Tape gate handles — handles designed to connect to polytape for tape-based electric fence systems; wider grip to accommodate the flat tape
- Inline switches — permanent mounting switches that interrupt the fence circuit at a fixed point; allows a section of fence to be de-energised without disconnecting the whole fence; useful for stock handling areas and fixed gateways
- Carry handles — insulated handles that allow you to pick up and carry an electrified wire section to create a temporary gateway
Choosing the Right Gate Handle
For regularly used gateways such as daily rotational grazing moves, bungee rope handles are the most practical — they maintain constant tension and are quick to hook and unhook without bending or tangling. For infrequent gateway openings, standard rope handles are adequate. For large opening widths, use multiple gate handle sections joined end-to-end. Ensure the handle’s insulation rating is appropriate for your energiser’s output voltage.
Installation Tips
Install insulated eye hooks or gate hooks on posts at either side of the gateway opening. The gate handle rope or bungee should have enough slack to reach the hook comfortably when stretched — allow for seasonal vegetation growth that may reduce accessible hook height. Always test the gate handle connection is complete before leaving the gateway closed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a gate handle conduct the full fence voltage?
A good quality gate handle maintains the fence circuit reliably. Some voltage loss (typically 200–500V) through the connection is normal. Ensure handles are clean and connections are tight for best conductivity.
How many gate handles do I need per gateway?
One gate handle per wire line. If your fence has two or three wire strands through the gateway, you will need one handle per strand.
