Weed Mat — Buying Guide

What Is Weed Mat?

Weed mat (also known as weed barrier fabric, landscape fabric or weed control fabric) is a permeable woven fabric installed on the soil surface, underneath a top dressing of mulch, gravel or pebbles, to suppress weed germination and growth. It blocks light from reaching weed seeds in the soil while allowing water, air and nutrients to pass through to the plants and soil below. It is widely used in residential gardens, commercial landscaping, vegetable gardens and under pavers and aggregate pathways.

Key Benefits of Weed Mat

  • Reduces weeding time — significantly reduces the frequency and effort of manual weeding in garden beds and pathways
  • Maintains soil moisture — reduces evaporation from the soil surface, particularly in combination with mulch; reduces watering frequency
  • Prevents soil-mulch mixing — stops mulch from working into the soil over time, maintaining a clean mulch layer
  • UV-stabilised durability — quality weed mat is designed to last many years in outdoor conditions without degradation
  • Permeable to water and air — unlike plastic sheeting, woven weed mat allows rainfall and irrigation to penetrate to the soil

Selecting the Right Weed Mat Weight

Weed mat is available in different weight grades (measured in grams per square metre — GSM). Lighter-weight mats (50–70 GSM) are suitable for annual garden beds and vegetable gardens where the mat may be removed and replaced each season. Heavier-weight mats (90–130+ GSM) are more durable and suitable for permanent landscaping, paths and under gravel or pebble coverings where the mat will remain in place for many years.

Installation Tips

Prepare the soil surface before installation — remove all existing weeds (including roots) as established weeds can sometimes push through light-weight fabric. Cut the mat to size with scissors. Use ground pins (weed mat pegs) to hold the mat in place, spacing pins at 300–500mm intervals around edges and joins. Cut crosses (X-cuts) for plants already in the ground. Overlap joins by at least 100mm. Cover with a mulch or gravel layer (50–75mm minimum) immediately after installation to protect the mat from UV degradation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does weed mat stop all weeds?
Weed mat significantly reduces weeding but does not completely eliminate it. Wind-blown seeds can germinate in the mulch layer above the mat. Some aggressive weeds can penetrate lighter-weight fabrics over time. Heavier-weight fabric provides better long-term weed suppression.

How long does weed mat last?
When covered with mulch or gravel (protecting from UV), quality weed mat typically lasts 5–15 years or more depending on the weight and quality of the product.
