Guinea Pig Enclosure Wire & Mesh — Buying Guide
Housing Guinea Pigs Safely
Guinea pigs are small, ground-dwelling animals that need secure housing to protect them from predators — particularly foxes, cats and birds of prey, which are significant threats to guinea pigs kept in backyards across Australia. The right wire mesh for a guinea pig enclosure must be small enough to prevent escapes by small guinea pigs, strong enough to keep predators out, and appropriate for both the sides and roof of the enclosure.
Recommended Mesh Specifications
- Aperture size — use 12mm x 12mm or 25mm x 25mm welded mesh; 25mm square apertures are the maximum suitable for most guinea pig breeds to prevent escape; 12mm mesh excludes mice and snakes as well
- Wire gauge — use minimum 16-gauge welded mesh for the sides and roof; heavier gauge (14-gauge) is preferred if cats or foxes are a significant threat in your area as they will attempt to push or bite through lighter mesh
- Galvanised finish — galvanised welded mesh is durable and weather-resistant; avoids the sharp edges associated with hexagonal chicken wire
- Roof coverage — always use a roof on guinea pig enclosures; foxes and birds of prey can access open-top runs even in suburban areas
Enclosure Design Tips
Guinea pig runs should provide at least 0.5 m² per guinea pig of floor space, with additional space for exercise. The floor of the run can be grass or solid (timber or concrete), but avoid wire floors as they can injure guinea pig feet. Include a covered hutch area within the run for shelter. Secure all doors and access panels with locks that cannot be opened by a curious or persistent fox.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can guinea pigs escape through chicken wire?
Large-aperture chicken wire (50mm) can allow small guinea pigs to escape. For guinea pigs, use 25mm x 25mm or finer welded mesh to prevent escapes.
What predators threaten guinea pigs in Australia?
Foxes, dogs, cats, snakes and raptors (hawks and eagles) are all significant threats to guinea pigs in suburban and rural areas. A solid, well-constructed enclosure with a roof is essential protection against all of these.
