Anti-Bird Netting — Buying Guide
Why Use Anti-Bird Netting?
Birds cause significant crop losses in Australian horticulture. Fruit trees, berries, grapes and vegetable gardens can suffer extensive damage from parrots, corellas, starlings, wattlebirds and other species. Anti-bird netting provides an effective, chemical-free physical barrier that excludes birds from valuable crops without harming them. It is the preferred choice for organic growers and home gardeners who want reliable, season-long crop protection.
Applications for Anti-Bird Netting
- Fruit trees — drape over individual trees or use on permanent frame systems over orchards
- Berry crops — blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and currants; drape directly over bush rows or install on wire frames
- Vineyard bird control — lightweight netting draped over grape vine rows prior to ripening
- Vegetable gardens — protect brassicas, corn and other crops from bird pecking and seed scratching
- Building protection — heavy-duty bird exclusion netting for excluding pigeons and starlings from building ledges, awnings and eaves
Choosing the Right Aperture
Anti-bird netting aperture size determines which bird species are excluded. For small birds (sparrows, finches), use 13mm aperture. For medium-sized birds (starlings, mynas, rosellas), 19mm is adequate. For larger parrots and corellas, 25mm aperture may be used — though smaller apertures are more reliable as larger birds can push through wider mesh. When in doubt, use smaller aperture netting.
Installation Tips
Drape netting over trees and bushes and secure at the base with pegs, clips or tie wire to prevent birds from accessing fruit from underneath. Support netting on wire or poly-pipe frames over long rows to prevent the netting from pressing onto the crop (which can cause fruit damage and allow birds to peck through the mesh). Remove netting promptly after harvest to prevent birds from becoming entangled. Store netting in a cool, dark location off-season to maximise lifespan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does anti-bird netting also exclude insects?
Netting with apertures of 1mm or less can exclude insects; standard bird netting with 13–25mm apertures does not exclude insects. For insect exclusion, use purpose-designed fine insect exclusion mesh.
How do I prevent birds from being entangled in the netting?
Use properly sized netting with the correct aperture for your target birds. Drape and support netting so it is taut and does not sag, reducing the risk of birds becoming tangled. Inspect regularly during use.
