Hinge Joint Mesh — Buying Guide
What Is Hinge Joint Mesh?
Hinge joint mesh (also known as HJ mesh or hinged joint wire) is a woven wire mesh where horizontal wires are held in place by a vertical wire that wraps around them in a hinge-like configuration, allowing the knot to slide slightly under tension. This unique joint design allows the mesh to flex and self-adjust when struck by stock, posts or other loads, reducing the risk of mesh breakage and increasing fence longevity in real-world rural conditions.
Why Hinge Joint Mesh Is the Rural Standard
Hinge joint mesh has been the backbone of Australian rural fencing for decades. Its combination of strength, flexibility, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness has made it the go-to choice for sheep and cattle graziers across the country. The graduated wire spacing — closer together at the bottom (for lambs and small stock) and wider at the top (for economy) — provides the right level of containment where it is most needed.
Common Sizes and Specifications
- Heights — typically 730mm, 900mm, 1050mm and 1200mm; taller mesh for deer and wild dog exclusion
- Wire spacings — graduated from 75mm at the bottom to 150mm or 300mm at the top
- Wire gauges — typically 2.0mm–2.5mm horizontal wires with heavier vertical stay wires
- With or without stiff stays — stiff stay versions resist deformation better under high livestock pressure
- Roll lengths — typically 100m for standard rural fencing applications
Installation Tips
Hinge joint mesh is installed by tensioning the roll between heavy strainer posts using appropriate tensioning equipment. Intermediate posts should be spaced at 3–4 metre centres. The mesh should be tensioned horizontally until it is firm but not overtightened. Attach the mesh to intermediate posts using approved staples (for timber posts) or tie wire (for steel pickets). Always work from the inside (contained) side of the fence when tensioning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hinge joint and ring lock mesh?
Both are woven wire mesh for rural fencing. Hinge joint uses a sliding knot that allows the vertical wire to move slightly under pressure. Ring lock uses a locked knot that is permanently fixed, providing more rigidity. Ring lock is often preferred for high-pressure areas near watering points and yards.
How long does hinge joint mesh last?
Quality hot-dipped galvanised hinge joint mesh typically lasts 20–30 years with correct installation and maintenance. Regular inspection and retensioning extends fence life significantly.
