Why Rabbit Exclusion Fencing Is Essential

Rabbits cause enormous damage to Australian agriculture and natural environments. The Critical Ground Interface

The most important feature of effective rabbit exclusion fencing is how the base of the mesh meets the ground. Rabbits are prolific diggers — they will quickly find and exploit any unfenced ground interface. The two accepted methods are: burying the bottom 150–300mm of the mesh underground (bend the buried section outward at 90° away from the enclosure for maximum effectiveness), or folding the mesh outward at ground level 300–450mm and pegging it flat. The outward-fold method is faster to install and equally effective in most soils.

Installation Steps

Mark out the fence line, clear vegetation, and set posts at 3-metre centres. Unroll the rabbit netting and attach to posts using staples (timber) or tie wire (steel pickets). Before securing the base, fold or bury the bottom 150–300mm outward. Staple or pin the outward fold at ground level. Join rolls with a minimum one-aperture overlap, tying joins securely with tie wire. Install a self-latching gate to complete the enclosure.
