Vermin Mesh — Buying Guide

What Is Vermin Mesh?

Vermin mesh is a fine-gauge wire mesh with small aperture sizes, specifically designed to exclude mice, rats, snakes, feral cats, weasels and other pest animals from sensitive areas. The small aperture size (typically 12mm x 12mm or 6mm x 6mm) prevents vermin from squeezing through the mesh, while the wire construction provides a durable, long-lasting physical barrier that cannot be gnawed through by rodents.

Key Applications

  • Poultry coop and aviary protection — excluding rats and snakes from chicken coops, aviaries and bird enclosures
  • Underfloor and subfloor screening — preventing rodents and snakes from accessing the underfloor space of homes and sheds
  • Vegetable garden protection — fine mesh barriers around raised beds to exclude mice and small pests
  • Grain storage protection — lining bins and storage areas to exclude rodent access
  • Ventilation screening — covering vents, eaves and openings in buildings to prevent vermin entry while maintaining airflow
  • Foundation protection — mesh skirts around building perimeters to prevent burrowing rodents

Selecting the Right Aperture Size

The aperture size determines which pests are excluded. As a guide: 12mm x 12mm mesh excludes mice and small rats but not large rats; 6mm x 6mm mesh excludes mice, small rats and snakes; and even finer mesh excludes insects. For snake exclusion, use 6mm or smaller apertures. For rat exclusion, 12mm apertures are generally effective, as rats cannot squeeze through gaps smaller than approximately 12mm in diameter.

Wire Gauge and Material

For vermin exclusion, heavier gauge mesh (19 gauge or heavier) is preferred as it cannot be gnawed through by determined rodents. Galvanised mesh resists corrosion and maintains the integrity of the barrier over many years. Avoid plastic mesh for vermin exclusion — rodents can easily gnaw through plastic materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will vermin mesh stop snakes?
Fine vermin mesh (6mm x 6mm or smaller) is effective against most Australian snake species. Ensure there are no gaps at joins, edges or corners where snakes could slip through or under.

Can rats chew through vermin mesh?
Heavy-gauge galvanised metal mesh cannot be gnawed through by rats. Avoid using light-gauge or plastic mesh in areas with significant rodent pressure.

What is the best vermin mesh for a chicken coop?
Use welded wire mesh with 12mm x 12mm apertures and 16-gauge or heavier wire. This excludes mice, rats and snakes while being durable enough for long-term outdoor use.
