Wood Post Electric Fence Insulators — Buying Guide
What Are Wood Post Insulators?
Electric fence insulators attach the electrified wire, tape or rope to fence posts while electrically isolating it from the post. Without insulators, the electric current would leak through direct contact with the timber or steel post to ground, reducing the fence voltage and making it ineffective. Quality insulators maintain a reliable electrical barrier between the conductor and the post, ensuring maximum pulse delivery along the entire fence line.
Types of Wood Post Insulators
- Screw-in insulators — threaded plastic insulators that screw directly into the timber post; fast to install and secure in timber; available for wire and tape
- Nail-on insulators — flat-backed insulators fixed to the post with a nail or staple; simple and low-cost; suitable for permanent fence lines
- Pinlock insulators — insulators with a pin that locks the wire into the insulator groove; prevent wire from jumping out under tension
- Corner and end post insulators — heavy-duty insulators designed for use at corners, strainer posts and high-tension points where wire runs change direction or are under high tension
- Tape insulators — wider insulators or insulator reels designed to carry flat electric fence tape; prevent tape from twisting and maintain flat orientation
Selecting the Right Insulator
Match the insulator type to the fence wire type (plain wire, high-tensile wire, polywire, tape or rope). For permanent electric fence lines with high-tensile wire, use screw-in or pinlock insulators with sufficient mechanical strength. For tape fencing, use purpose-designed tape insulators. For temporary fencing, clip-on post insulators that can be quickly attached and removed without tools are the practical choice.
Installation Tips
Position insulators at the correct height for the animal being controlled — typically 60–70cm from the ground for cattle, lower for sheep. Use an insulator at every post. On corners and ends, use corner insulators or inline strainers to handle the wire tension without risk of the insulator pulling out of the post. Inspect insulators regularly for UV cracking and replace any that are broken or allowing current leakage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my insulators are leaking current?
Use an electric fence voltmeter to check fence voltage at multiple points. A significantly lower reading further from the energiser suggests insulation breakdown at insulators or through vegetation contact.
Can I use wood post insulators on steel star pickets?
Some wood post insulators may fit star picket clips, but purpose-designed steel post insulators are better suited for use on star pickets and provide a more secure fit.
