Bird Fencing & Netting — Buying Guide
Bird Containment and Exclusion
Bird fencing serves two distinct purposes: containing birds within an enclosure (such as an aviary, poultry run or ornamental bird garden) or excluding wild birds from areas where they cause damage (such as cherry, berry and grape crops, or from sensitive environmental areas). The specific requirements for each application differ significantly in terms of mesh aperture, wire gauge and overall fence design.
Aviary and Bird Enclosure Fencing
- Aviary mesh — fine-gauge welded or woven wire mesh for bird enclosures; aperture size matched to the smallest bird being contained; stainless steel mesh preferred for strong-beaked birds such as parrots
- Chicken netting / hexagonal wire — economical option for large-bird enclosures (chickens, geese, ducks) and free-range runs
- Square welded mesh — rigid and strong; used for walk-in aviary panels and flight cage construction
- Bird netting — lightweight polypropylene or nylon mesh for crop protection, pond netting and large-area bird exclusion
Wild Bird Exclusion Netting
Plastic bird netting is widely used in horticulture to protect fruit, berry and grape crops from bird damage at harvest time. It can be used as a temporary drape over individual plants or trellised structures, or as permanent netting stretched over permanent frame systems for large-scale orchards and vineyards. For permanent applications, UV-stabilised netting provides significantly longer service life.
Key Specifications
For bird containment: match mesh aperture to the smallest bird being contained — finches and small songbirds require 12mm or smaller apertures; medium birds (budgies, cockatiels) may use 19–25mm; large parrots are typically contained with 25–50mm mesh but require heavy gauge to resist biting. For wild bird exclusion: aperture of 13mm–25mm is adequate for most crop protection applications against small to medium-sized birds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best mesh for a parrot aviary?
For parrots, use 16-gauge or heavier welded mesh in stainless steel or heavy galvanised wire to resist biting. Aperture size of 25mm x 25mm is suitable for most medium parrots; smaller apertures for smaller species.
Can bird netting be used permanently?
UV-stabilised polypropylene bird netting can be used semi-permanently over frame structures. It typically lasts 5–10 years in Australian outdoor conditions before UV degradation requires replacement.
