Pig Fencing — Buying Guide
Pig Fencing Challenges
Pigs are among the most difficult animals to contain or exclude with conventional fencing. Domestic pigs are strong, intelligent and persistent — they will root under fences, push through weak points and test for vulnerabilities systematically. Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) present additional challenges due to their strength and aggression. Effective pig fencing must address rooting (digging under), pushing through the mesh, and in the case of feral pig exclusion, the sheer force of wild pig pressure.
Domestic Pig Containment
- Electric fencing — the most effective solution for domestic pig containment; pigs are very sensitive to electric shock and quickly learn to respect an electric fence; a single low strand (150–300mm from the ground) is highly effective
- Heavy-gauge welded mesh — rigid welded mesh panels for permanent pig runs and sties; use at least 14-gauge mesh that pigs cannot root through or push aside
- Hinge joint mesh with solid footing — mesh fencing with a buried or concrete footing at the base to prevent rooting; effective for semi-permanent pig paddocks
Feral Pig Exclusion
Feral pig exclusion fencing is used to protect crops, water sources and sensitive ecosystems from damage by wild pig populations. Effective feral pig exclusion requires heavy-gauge mesh (2.5mm or heavier), adequate height (900mm–1200mm), and a solid ground interface (buried skirt or concrete footing) to prevent rooting under the fence. Electric outrigger wires are often added to discourage pigs from pushing on the fence.
Installation Considerations
Post spacing should be reduced in pig fencing compared to standard stock fencing — 2–2.5 metre centres for domestic pig runs and 2.5–3 metre centres for feral pig exclusion fencing. Bury or concrete the base of the mesh where pig rooting pressure is expected. Always thoroughly check and repair any gaps that pigs discover — they will return repeatedly to exploit weaknesses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is electric fencing enough to contain pigs?
Electric fencing alone is highly effective for well-managed domestic pigs once they have been trained to respect it. A two-wire system (one low strand for nose-level shock, one mid-level strand) is standard for pig paddocks in managed grazing systems.
What mesh is best for a pig sty or permanent run?
Heavy-gauge welded mesh (14-gauge, 50mm x 50mm or 75mm x 75mm) on solid steel posts is recommended for permanent pig housing. Combine with a concrete floor or footing at the base to prevent rooting out.
