Wallaby Exclusion Fencing — Buying Guide
Protecting Your Property from Wallabies and Kangaroos
Wallabies and kangaroos can cause significant damage to vegetable gardens, orchards, vineyards, young tree plantings and pasture. Unlike pest animals such as rabbits and foxes, native macropods are protected and cannot be controlled by lethal means in most situations without a permit — making exclusion fencing the primary and most practical long-term solution for property protection.
Key Fencing Requirements for Wallaby Exclusion
- Height — wallabies can jump significant heights; a minimum fence height of 1500mm is recommended for smaller wallaby species, with 1800mm or higher for larger species and kangaroos
- Mesh strength — wallabies are strong and will push on and probe fences; use heavy-gauge welded mesh or hinge joint mesh with adequate strength to resist sustained pressure
- Aperture size — mesh apertures should be small enough that wallabies cannot push their heads through (typically 75mm x 75mm or smaller for adults); smaller for juvenile animals
- No digging skirt required — unlike rabbits, wallabies are not significant diggers; a ground skirt is generally not required for wallaby exclusion
Wallaby Fencing Options
The most effective wallaby exclusion fencing uses heavy-gauge welded mesh or hinge joint wire mesh of appropriate height, well-tensioned between solid posts. For large-scale revegetation plantings, individual tree guards protect newly planted seedlings from browsing by wallabies and other wildlife. For vineyards and orchards, complete perimeter enclosures with appropriate height are necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can electric fencing exclude wallabies?
Electric fencing can be effective for excluding wallabies, particularly if they are not yet habituated to an area. However, native animals may not learn to avoid electric fences as reliably as domestic livestock. Physical mesh fencing is generally more reliable for permanent protection.
Do I need a permit to fence against wallabies?
Physical exclusion fencing is generally legal as a wildlife management tool across most of Australia. Always check your state’s wildlife regulations for any relevant requirements before installation.
