Dog Mesh — Buying Guide
Choosing Dog Mesh for Your Breed
The right dog mesh depends on your dog’s size, strength and escape tendencies. Smaller dogs and puppies need finer aperture mesh that prevents squeezing through gaps. Medium and large dogs need stronger, heavier-gauge mesh that resists pushing, chewing and prolonged pressure. For determined escape artists or strong working breeds, heavy-gauge welded mesh is the most reliable choice.
Types of Dog Mesh
- Welded wire mesh (50mm x 50mm) — the most popular choice for medium to large dog enclosures; rigid, strong and provides a clear view into and out of the enclosure; available in 14-gauge and heavier for larger and stronger dogs
- Chain wire (chain link) — flexible and extremely durable; widely used for dog pound and kennel applications; provides good containment for most breeds; the aperture size should be appropriate for your dog size
- Fine welded mesh (25mm x 25mm) — suitable for small breeds, puppies and dogs that push their snout through wider-aperture mesh
- Heavy-gauge security mesh — for guard dogs, working dogs and situations where maximum strength is required
Fence Height and Anti-Escape Measures
As a general guide: small dogs (1200mm minimum); medium dogs (1500mm); large and active dogs (1800mm). For dogs capable of jumping, use 1800mm mesh with an inward-angled top section or electric deterrent wire. To prevent digging out, bury the mesh 300mm underground or fold the base outward 300mm and peg it to the ground. Regularly inspect the fence for any gaps or weak points — dogs are remarkably good at finding them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What gauge welded mesh should I use for a large dog?
For large dogs, use 14-gauge welded mesh with 50mm x 50mm aperture. For very large or powerful breeds (Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Bull Terriers), 12-gauge or heavier is recommended.
Is chain wire or welded mesh better for dogs?
Both work well. Welded mesh is more rigid and provides a more solid appearance. Chain wire is more flexible and typically more economical for larger enclosures. Both can be used effectively for dog containment with the right gauge and height selection.
