Welded Mesh — Buying Guide

What Is Welded Mesh?

Welded mesh is manufactured by spot-welding straight lengths of galvanised wire at each crossing point to create a rigid grid with uniform rectangular or square apertures. The welded joints make this mesh significantly stiffer and stronger than woven wire mesh of the same gauge, providing better dimensional stability and resistance to deformation under pressure or impact. Welded mesh is widely used where rigidity and security matter more than flexibility.

Applications

  • Security fencing — perimeter barriers for commercial, industrial and construction sites
  • Animal enclosures — dog runs, poultry pens, rabbit hutches, aviary panels and pet enclosures of all kinds
  • Garden protection — excluding pests from vegetable gardens, orchards and ornamental plantings
  • Concrete reinforcement — SL mesh for slab reinforcement in construction applications
  • Gabion baskets — filling gabion basket frames for retaining walls and erosion control
  • Under-deck screening and venting — preventing animal access to underfloor spaces in homes and outbuildings

Selecting the Right Welded Mesh

Key specifications to match to your application include: wire gauge (heavier gauge = stronger mesh), aperture size (smaller for finer containment and security), and roll or panel dimensions. Common aperture sizes include 50mm x 50mm (general purpose animal enclosures), 25mm x 25mm (rabbit and poultry containment) and 75mm x 75mm or 100mm x 100mm (security fencing and larger animal enclosures).

Galvanised vs PVC Coated Welded Mesh

Standard galvanised welded mesh is suitable for most outdoor applications. PVC-coated welded mesh adds an additional coloured polymer layer (typically green or black) for improved corrosion resistance and a more attractive appearance — suitable for garden, pool surrounds and visible fence applications where aesthetics matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between welded mesh and chain wire?
Welded mesh has a rigid, fixed grid pattern with uniform square or rectangular apertures. Chain wire has a diamond-pattern aperture and is more flexible. Welded mesh provides greater rigidity and security; chain wire is more flexible and easier to tension in longer fence runs.

Can welded mesh be cut on site?
Yes — welded mesh can be cut cleanly with bolt cutters, tin snips or an angle grinder with a cutting disc. Always wear eye protection and gloves.
