Garden Fencing — Buying Guide
Why Garden Fencing?
Garden fencing serves multiple purposes: defining garden beds, protecting plants from pets and wildlife, creating visual boundaries within a yard, and adding structural interest to landscaping designs. The right garden fence balances function, aesthetics and budget — from simple wire netting around a veggie patch to decorative picket fencing framing a cottage garden.
Types of Garden Fencing
- Hexagonal wire netting — lightweight, economical wire netting perfect for enclosing vegetable gardens, flower beds and small animal enclosures
- Welded wire mesh panels — rigid, sturdy panels ideal for creating permanent raised bed borders and pet-exclusion garden barriers
- Timber picket fencing — classic Australian garden fence style; adds character to cottage and traditional garden designs
- PVC fencing panels — maintenance-free, modern garden screening in Hamptons and contemporary styles
- Decorative metal edging — low-profile steel edging to define garden beds and lawn edges cleanly
Protecting Your Garden from Pests
Garden fencing is also widely used to exclude rabbits, bandicoots, possums and other garden pests. For rabbit exclusion, use wire mesh with an aperture of 25mm or less and bury the mesh at least 150mm underground (with a fold outward at the base) to prevent digging. For birds and flying foxes, an overhead netting cover may be necessary in addition to side fencing.
Choosing the Right Height
Garden fence height depends on the application. For low decorative borders around beds, 300–600mm height is typical. For rabbit exclusion or pet-exclusion barriers, 900mm–1200mm above ground is recommended (plus buried skirt). For privacy screening or windbreaks, 1200mm–1800mm panels are appropriate. Always consider the maintenance implications of taller fencing when selecting fence height.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fencing to keep rabbits out of a vegetable garden?
Use welded wire mesh or hex wire with a maximum 25mm aperture. Bury the base 150mm underground and fold outward at the bottom to prevent rabbits from digging under the fence.
Can I use garden fencing for a chicken run?
Light garden fencing is not suitable for fox-proof chicken enclosures. For chickens, use heavier 14-gauge welded mesh with appropriate buried skirts and a roof — see our Chicken Fencing category for purpose-designed options.
What is the most low-maintenance garden fencing?
PVC and aluminium fencing require no painting, staining or sealing and offer the lowest long-term maintenance requirements of all garden fencing options.
