Plain Galvanised Wire — Buying Guide
What Is Plain Wire?
Plain wire (also called line wire or fencing wire) is smooth galvanised steel wire without barbs or other features, used as the primary structural element in multi-strand plain wire fencing — the most widely used boundary fencing type on Australian farms, stations and rural properties. It is sold in various gauges and in hard-drawn or high-tensile specifications to suit different fencing applications.
Types of Plain Fencing Wire
- Soft (annealed) wire — ductile and easy to work with; suitable for short fence runs, tie wire applications and lightweight fencing; lower tensile strength than high-tensile wire; typically 2.0mm–3.15mm gauge
- Hard-drawn (HT) wire — stronger than soft wire; the standard choice for medium-length rural fencing; provides good tension retention over time; 2.0mm–2.5mm common gauges
- High-tensile (HT) wire — the highest strength option; allows wider post spacing for reduced material and labour costs on large-scale fencing projects; typically 1.6mm–2.0mm gauge; requires tensioning tools
Common Plain Wire Fencing Configurations
A standard 5-strand plain wire cattle fence uses 5 horizontal wires at heights of approximately 250mm, 500mm, 750mm, 950mm and 1100mm from the ground, typically with a barbed top wire. A standard 7-strand sheep fence may add additional lower wires for lamb containment. Post spacing of 3–6 metres for star picket intermediate posts with strainer posts at 100–200 metre intervals is standard in Australian rural fencing practice.
Wire Gauge Guide
The wire gauge (diameter) determines strength and service life. As a general guide: 2.5mm wire is a popular all-rounder for most rural fencing applications; 2.0mm is lighter and used where economy is prioritised; 3.15mm is heavier for high-pressure areas such as watering points and handling facilities. High-tensile wire is typically available in 1.6mm–2.0mm gauges with strength comparable to larger diameter soft wire.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hard-drawn and high-tensile wire?
Both are stronger than soft annealed wire. High-tensile wire has been specifically manufactured from higher-strength steel and undergoes a different production process, allowing it to be drawn to a smaller diameter while maintaining greater breaking strength than equivalent-diameter hard-drawn wire.
How many metres in a coil of plain wire?
Standard coil lengths vary by gauge and weight — common sizes are 200m and 500m coils. Check individual product listings for metres per coil.
