Steel Fence Posts — Buying Guide

Types of Steel Fence Posts

Steel posts are used in a wide variety of fencing and landscaping applications. The most common types available include star pickets (Y-posts), round steel pipe, RHS (rectangular hollow section) and angle iron. Each serves different purposes and is suited to different fencing systems. Understanding which type you need is the first step to a successful installation.

Star Pickets (Y-Posts)

Star pickets — also called Y-posts or steel posts — are the workhorse of Australian rural and agricultural fencing. Their Y-shaped cross-section provides excellent strength for their weight, and the built-in wire clips make attaching wire mesh and plain wire fast and easy. Star pickets are available in galvanised and black bitumen coatings, and in a range of lengths for fence heights from 600mm to 2400mm and above. They are driven directly into the ground using a steel post rammer — no concrete required for most soil types.

Steel Round Posts and Pipe

Round galvanised steel pipe is used as fence posts in chain wire and various other fence systems. It provides excellent strength in larger diameters and is the preferred post type for commercial chain wire fencing, school and sporting ground fencing, and gate posts. Round posts are typically set in concrete footings for a permanent installation.

Selecting the Right Post Length and Gauge

As a rule, steel posts should be set to a depth of at least one-third of the total post length in stable soil, or deeper in sandy or unstable ground. For a 1200mm above-ground fence height, a 1650mm–1800mm post is typically required. Post gauge (thickness) should be matched to the expected load — lighter gauge posts are suitable for light temporary fencing, while heavier gauge is required for permanent, tensioned fencing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I drive star pickets into hard ground?
Use a steel post rammer (a heavy steel tube closed at one end) to drive star pickets into most soil types. For extremely hard or rocky ground, pre-drill a pilot hole with a post hole digger or auger.

Can I use steel posts for pool fencing?
Galvanised steel round posts are used as pool fence posts in some systems, but pool fencing posts must meet Australian Standard requirements. Always check compliance before installing near a pool.

How long do galvanised steel posts last?
Hot-dipped galvanised steel posts typically last 20–40 years in most Australian soil conditions, depending on soil acidity and moisture levels.
