Description

Thunderbird EF-5A Fault Locator / Fault Finder

The Thunderbird EF-5A is an electric fence fault locator designed to identify the precise location of faults along an electric fence line. Finding a fault by visual inspection alone can take hours on large rural properties with kilometres of fence. This fault locator speeds up the process by detecting where voltage is leaking from the fence and directing you to the problem area quickly.

The EF-5A fault locator works by measuring the signal direction from the energiser pulse as you walk the fence line. The signal strength changes as you approach or move away from a fault, guiding you directly to the trouble spot. Common faults it detects include broken wire, vegetation contact, failed insulators, and poor connections. Once you locate the fault, you can repair it on the spot and retest the fence to confirm voltage has returned to normal.

The EF-5A is compatible with all Thunderbird and third-party energisers. For the full toolkit, browse our range of electric fencing accessories including volt meters, earth rods, and insulators to keep your fence performing at its best.

How to Use the EF-5A the device

Before starting, confirm your energiser is switched on and the fence pulse is active. Then, hold the EF-5A close to the fence at the energiser end and note the signal direction. In addition, walk along the fence away from the energiser and watch the signal indicator for directional changes. Finally, when the signal reverses direction, you have found the fault location — repair the fault and retest to confirm the fence is back to full voltage.
